Southern Forests

Just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean you need to hibernate. Instead get out there, enjoy and embrace winter for all that it’s worth. And when it comes to doing this, look no further than the Southern Forests.

This region of Australia’s South West takes in delightful forest towns like Manjimup, Pemberton and Walpole. Such townships are surrounded by lush green forest – majestic cities of trees clambering for space amongst the thick growth.

These trees are so impressive they seem to have a personality – wise and patient old souls overlooking their forest surrounds. Perhaps it’s this sense of soul that gives the forest air such an enchanting feel – like a world from a mystical tale of goblins and fairies.

When it comes to experiencing the forest, perhaps no place is as popular as the Valley of the Giants, near Walpole. Here you can embark on the world-famous tree top walk through the canopy of the trees.

You can also set out on marked paths to giant, old tingle trees and marvel at their hollowed-out base.

You can take in the scenic beauty of the Southern Forests on one of the many scenic drives throughout the region.

The Karri Forest Explorer Drive is particularly beautiful. It starts in Pemberton and winds its way through some of the most magnificent karri forest. It passes the Gloucester Tree, a 60 metre giant which you can climb to take in spectacular views of the surrounding karri forest.

The Heartbreak Trail is also a stunning drive, meandering through the Warren National Park along the valley of the Warren River.

Walk trails criss-cross the many national parks in the region, offering an excellent way to get out and marvel at nature. Take them at your own pace, perhaps stopping to picnic at a dam or a waterfall on the way.

Beedelup National Park is particularly lovely in wintertime, taking in the cascading waters of the Beedelup Falls, which drop for 100 metres over a series of granite rocks.

For a more relaxing and indulgent visit you can choose from a glorious variety of galleries, wineries and restaurants in scenic settings, amid forest or by the coast.
