Great Southern
Imagine a winter wonderland complete with rugged, coast, soaring ranges, wineries, galleries and walking trails and you have the Great Southern.
This spectacular region in Australia’s South West is blessed with stunning coastal scenery. Soaring sheer cliff faces give way to sheltered beaches and bays and the water colours range from deep blue, almost black, to dazzling turquoise.
This scenery is particularly exhilarating in winter, when wild waves from the Southern Ocean pound relentlessly at the base of cliffs, sending a salty spray flying many metres above.
You are highly likely to spot whales while on the Great Southern coast.
Albany
is a particularly good place to see them. Indeed, southern right whales often take up residence in the bays here with their calves.
Inland is just as spectacular, especially amid the tumbling landscapes of the Porongurup and Stirling Range. These impressive ranges soar from the surrounding landscape in wave upon wave of valleys and hills.
Walking trails allow you to get up close and appreciate this natural magic, both along the coast and inland. Otherwise, journey through the spectacular landscapes on a scenic drive.
When it comes to taking time out from your exploration, head to towns like
Denmark
,
Albany
,
Porongurup
,
Cranbrook
and
Kojonup
. Denmark and Albany are spectacularly positioned on the coast, and boast vibrant town centres the whole year round while Porongurup, Cranbrook and Kojonup offer delightful rural settings and friendly country charm.
The whole region is also becoming increasingly renowned for its tasty produce and cool-climate wines. Try free range chicken, marron, trout, cheeses, toffee, olives, dukkah, sauces and marinades produced right here in the region.
Restaurants and cafes take advantage of the rich regional produce, offering it beautifully presented and prepared upon your plate.
The many wineries are particularly well known for their Rieslings and red wines. They range from charming family operations to more sophisticated establishments.
